The Why Behind Momma In Bloom

I was sitting there on the couch in our first home as husband & wife starring blankly into this baby who seemed to be latched to me day and night…My hair in a messy bun, the same pj’s as a day before, my husband at work on another double shift, & thinking if only I can have a friend over right now as I was the first in my circle to have a baby.. She pops off and my milk immediately begins to cover her face, she flinches in fright and begins to cry because she can’t see from the milk in her eyes.

I have this lodged feeling in my throat, water seems to rise on my bottom eyelids, and I too can not begin to see… I think she is not getting enough milk, am I not good enough to produce this milk that is a need to her survival, I didn’t mean to frighten her, she is so innocent, I can’t leave this house because what if she needs to eat right here right now, what if she pops off like this in public and is frightened again with milk all over my shirt & her.

My intuition was telling me to reach out for help.

Finally found my phone buried in the couch to call the lactation consultant number given to me in my hospital paperwork, “Mommy Baby Unit, can I help you” in an annoyed sigh. “Hi, um, I have a question about breastfeeding, um is the lactation consultant there?” “She’s busy with a patient right now, what do you need?” “Ok, well I’m just not sure my baby is getting what she needs, how do I make my milk stop from getting all over her, why is she popping off and on a lot, I feel she isn’t getting enough, what else can I do?” “Is she gaining weight?” “Ugh, I think so.” “Then she should be fine, you first need to schedule a phone consult with lactation and then another in person appointment, that’s all we can do for you right now, CLICK.”

I think to myself, that doesn’t help me in the now, when I felt most helpless, most vulnerable. Even though this made me want to go into lactation; I am not a lactation consultant, I am a postpartum doula! I became a doula specifically for this reason.. to help mom’s in their current state, their current emotions, have a list of resources & establish foundational skills to overcome barriers & align their vision of what they want their motherhood journey to be.
